1Password has integrated passkey support into Windows 11, enabling users to create, manage, and use passkeys within their password management system while using Windows Hello for authentication. The integration follows 1Password’s strategic partnership with Microsoft announced earlier this year to advance passwordless authentication.
Users can now manage passkeys directly within the 1Password interface, making it easier to create and implement these secure authentication keys. The development supports Microsoft’s broader initiative to accommodate third-party passkey providers in Windows 11, as part of the company’s planned transition away from traditional passwords by 2025.
The system incorporates Windows Hello functionality, allowing users to authenticate using biometric data, including facial recognition and fingerprint scanning. The integration builds upon Microsoft’s established Windows Hello biometric framework, which has been increasingly adopted across various platforms and devices to provide secure, convenient authentication.
Passkeys represent an advancement over traditional password systems by implementing public key cryptography, offering enhanced resistance to phishing attacks and password cracking attempts. Users can implement this functionality by installing the latest version of 1Password (Beta) and activating the “1Password” plugin through Windows 11’s Settings menu, specifically under Accounts > Passkeys > Advanced options.
