Signicat has integrated ID Austria, the country’s national digital identity, into its eID and Wallet Hub, giving the platform’s business customers a way to verify Austrian users against the government-issued credential through a single connection. ID Austria has been adopted by about 4.8 million Austrians, which the company puts at around 60 percent of the adult population, and is presented from the holder’s smartphone through the eAusweise app or the ID Austria app.

By bringing ID Austria into the eID and Wallet Hub, Signicat lets banks, insurers, telecom operators, and other regulated companies that already use the hub accept Austrian users alongside other European national eIDs. The hub connects more than 35 national electronic IDs through a single API, and is one of the routes the company is offering to relying parties preparing for the EU Digital Identity Wallet.

The integration is also positioned for the next stage of the European framework. Austria’s existing ID Austria and eAusweise apps are being updated to function as the country’s EU Digital Identity Wallet, using the open-source Valera wallet technology. Supporting ID Austria today gives Signicat customers a path into the EUDI Wallet when it arrives. “For several years, they will have to support national eIDs, but they also have to prepare for the EUDI Wallet of tomorrow,” said Allard Keuter, Head of Authentication and Wallets at Signicat.

Asger Hattel, Chief Executive Officer of Signicat, framed the broader challenge in terms of mobile interoperability. “The real challenge for Europe isn’t just creating a digital wallet, it’s ensuring it can connect to legacy systems people already use,” Hattel said.

ID Austria has been one of the more mature mobile identity rollouts in Europe, with a digital proof of identity recognized as equivalent to a physical ID inside Austria, and the eAusweise app hosting other government-issued mobile credentials such as the national digital student ID. Signicat targets sectors that face customer-onboarding obligations under eIDAS 2.0, the EU’s Anti-Money Laundering Regulation, and local Austrian rules.

The ID Austria integration is live for Signicat customers.
