Arizona Wallet Puts Vehicle Registration, Licenses, and Birth Certificates on Your Phone

Arizona residents can now carry a wallet on their phone that holds far more than a driving licence. AstreaX, a subsidiary of Michael Baker International, has launched the AX Wallet platform with Arizona as its first state adopter, enabling the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division to issue a broad set of government credentials directly to citizens’ smartphones under the brand name Arizona Wallet.

The credential set goes well beyond what commercial wallet platforms typically support. In addition to the mobile driver’s licence, Arizona Wallet can hold vehicle registration, vehicle title documents, insurance cards, student IDs, hunting and fishing licences, professional and occupational licences, birth certificates, food service and liquor licences, and organizational security credentials. All credentials are issued and managed by the state government rather than routed through a third-party platform operator.

That state-controlled model is the defining difference between Arizona Wallet and Arizona’s existing digital ID options. Arizona already participates in Apple Wallet’s digital ID programme and Google Wallet’s digital driver’s licence support. Those integrations give residents a convenient way to present their mDL at TSA checkpoints and select acceptance points. Arizona Wallet adds a government-owned layer that lets the state determine which documents and services are available, maintain direct control over credential issuance, and expand the credential set to document types that fall outside commercial wallet agreements.

The platform adheres to ISO 18013-5 and ISO 18013-7 standards for mobile driver’s licences and aligns with AAMVA Mobile Driver’s Licence Implementation Guidelines. It also supports government-to-citizen notifications for upcoming document expiration dates.

“We are redefining how governments and citizens connect, delivering a secure, modern and convenient experience,” said David Knigge, CEO of AstreaX. AstreaX specializes in government technology and digital identity, with a background in DMV modernization and licensing and permitting platforms.
