The Asia Pacific mobile economy has reached a significant milestone, achieving a value of $950 billion according to GSMA’s 2024 findings. The valuation demonstrates substantial growth driven by rapid 5G adoption and increasing AI technology integration across the region, building upon earlier consumer adoption challenges that the industry has successfully navigated.
The mobile sector has emerged as a crucial contributor to regional economic development, generating significant impact on GDP and employment. Asia Pacific currently leads globally in both interest and commercialization of 5G-Advanced networks, with GSMA Intelligence data from mid-2025 showing the region at the forefront of 5G adoption rates and network launches. The technological momentum was further evidenced by a 13 percent increase in visitor and exhibitor engagement at MWC Shanghai, marking a strong recovery from the pandemic-related disruptions of previous years.
AI technologies have become increasingly embedded within mobile services and infrastructure across the region, enhancing network efficiency and user experience while enabling new digital services. The integration supports broader initiatives to bridge digital divides and promote inclusive growth, particularly through programs like the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, which has seen strong adoption from major regional operators.
A significant development occurred on July 14, 2025, when the GSMA and Asian Development Bank (ADB) established a multi-year cooperation agreement to accelerate digital transformation and mobile connectivity across Asia Pacific. “Mobile technology has the power to transform lives, especially in regions where access to essential services is limited,” said John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer of the GSMA. “This partnership with the Asian Development Bank is an important milestone in our shared mission to create inclusive digital economies and build resilient societies across Asia and the Pacific.”
The GSMA-ADB partnership encompasses knowledge sharing, policy reform, public-private partnerships, and capacity building initiatives. The efforts aim to maximize mobile technology’s potential across various sectors, including health, education, finance, and disaster resilience. The collaboration builds upon successful regional initiatives like the Philippines’ digital ID program, which has demonstrated the transformative potential of mobile-first digital solutions.
The Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2025 served as a showcase for innovations in robotics, AI, and 5G-Advanced technologies from China and Asia, demonstrating the region’s technological leadership to an international audience. The event highlighted the region’s progress in implementing comprehensive digital transformation strategies, with several nations pursuing ambitious targets for digital economy development and technological innovation.
