Bank of Valletta Launches Enhanced Authentication System with Real-Time Transaction Alerts

Somalia Plans to Integrate Biometric National ID with Banking Sector

Bank of Valletta (BOV), Malta’s largest banking institution, has implemented new customer authentication security measures in 2024 to enhance protection against fraud and financial crime, with a focus on phone and in-person branch interactions. The initiatives follow a broader industry trend of rising mobile banking fraud, which has seen increases of up to 62 percent in some European markets.

The new authentication system for customer service calls requires customers registered for BOV Electronic Banking services to log in to their online banking account when initiating a call to the Customer Service Centre. The process involves authentication through a unique password or biometric verification on the customer’s personal device to confirm call legitimacy. Customers then identify themselves by providing their name, surname, date of birth, and ID number. The approach matches recent industry shifts toward passwordless authentication and enhanced multi-factor verification methods.

The multi-factor authentication approach replaces traditional security questions and reduces verification time by approximately five to seven minutes per interaction. “The new method combines multiple verification methods in a simpler and faster manner, saving around five minutes of authentication along the way, thereby increasing both efficiency and security simultaneously,” according to BOV.

For branch transactions, BOV has introduced immediate SMS notifications for cash withdrawals made over the counter. The alerts are sent to the customer’s registered mobile number in real-time, providing immediate transaction awareness. The feature is particularly valuable when third parties are authorized to conduct transactions on behalf of account holders. The bank emphasizes that these SMS notifications never request personal information or contain links, an important distinction given the rising prevalence of SMS-based phishing scams.

“This step allows the agent to verify the authenticity of the call, as access to Internet or Mobile Banking requires authentication via password or biometric verification on the customer’s personal mobile device,” said a BOV spokesperson.

The enhanced security measures are designed to reduce identity verification time while strengthening security through multiple verification layers. The SMS alert system serves as an immediate fraud detection tool, enabling customers to quickly identify unauthorized transactions. The implementations support BOV’s strategy to address increasingly sophisticated fraud attempts and maintain robust customer asset protection, following similar initiatives by other European financial institutions to enhance mobile banking security through biometric authentication.

The bank’s new security framework represents a growing trend among financial institutions worldwide to implement comprehensive digital security measures that balance customer convenience with robust protection against fraud. The approach mirrors recent initiatives by other banks to integrate advanced authentication methods, including facial recognition and fingerprint verification, into their security protocols.
