Bhutan Advances Ethereum-Anchored National Digital ID and Begins Staking ETH

Bhutan is pushing ahead with plans to anchor its national digital identity (NDI) system on the Ethereum blockchain, while at the same time building a direct financial position in the network through ether staking. The Royal Government of Bhutan has previously signaled that the NDI platform will be anchored on Ethereum by early 2026, putting the country among the earliest adopters of public-chain infrastructure for issuing government-backed digital credentials.

Recent on-chain analysis indicates that an address linked to the Bhutanese state has transferred and staked 320 ETH through validator provider Figment. Depending on the ether price at the time of execution, the stake is estimated to be worth between roughly 920,000 and 970,000 US dollars. Commentators view the move as an expansion of Bhutan’s exposure to Ethereum beyond using it purely as a technical anchor for identity proofs.

Government statements and partner commentary describe the NDI program as a way to issue privacy-preserving digital credentials that citizens can present across both public and private services. Ethereum is expected to provide a tamper-evident layer for publishing proofs and revocation records, with underlying personal data kept off-chain. The initiative fits into a broader digital-nation agenda that includes experimentation with digital assets and targeted investment in technology projects.

For identity and security specialists, Bhutan’s strategy is a closely watched example of national-scale identity infrastructure built on a public blockchain. Ongoing questions include how key management and account recovery will be handled for ordinary users, what categories of information are committed to the chain versus retained in off-chain systems, and how the architecture will align with evolving standards for verifiable credentials and decentralized identifiers.

The decision to stake ETH at a state level suggests that Bhutan intends to remain tightly coupled to Ethereum’s long-term technical and economic roadmap as the digital ID ecosystem matures. That coupling goes beyond relying on a single network for security guarantees; it also creates financial incentives tied to Ethereum’s performance. Observers will be monitoring how domestic regulators, civil society, and international partners respond to an identity system that depends so heavily on one public blockchain’s governance and risk profile.
