CLEAR has introduced CLEAR ID, a free digital identity option designed for use at U.S. Transportation Security Administration checkpoints. The company says travelers can create the credential in the CLEAR mobile app by uploading a U.S. passport, allowing identity verification at TSA without presenting a physical document at the checkpoint.
According to CLEAR, the setup flow lives in the app’s Vault feature, where users add their passport to generate the digital ID. CLEAR also emphasizes that travelers should still carry a REAL ID-compliant physical document when flying, even if they plan to use CLEAR ID at the airport.
The company is positioning CLEAR ID separately from CLEAR+, its paid membership product that provides access to dedicated airport lanes and biometric identity checks at CLEAR pods. By making the passport-based credential free, CLEAR appears to be expanding its role in everyday mobile identity flows while keeping the premium offering distinct.
As with other app-based identity credentials, attention will likely focus on account security and recovery: how devices are bound to an identity, what happens if a phone is lost, and how the service resists takeover attempts. The rollout also adds another data point to the question of how private-sector mobile credentials will coexist with government-backed wallet programs as digital IDs become more common at airports.
