The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) has successfully recovered $96,400 for a victim of a SIM swapping scam through the work of Detective Wegner and the department’s economic crimes team.
The incident began when a scammer convinced a cell phone provider to transfer the victim’s phone number to a new device. After gaining control of the phone number through this SIM swap, the perpetrator accessed the victim’s personal accounts and initiated unauthorized transfers totaling $195,000.
Through collaboration between PSLPD investigators and the bank’s fraud department, authorities were able to trace and freeze approximately half of the stolen funds. The recovered amount of $96,400 has been returned to the victim.
“I am grateful to the Port St. Lucie Police Department for all the work they have done on my behalf. Detective Wegner’s communication and progress on my case have been incredibly helpful,” the victim stated.
SIM swapping has become a significant cybersecurity threat, with recent data showing a 1,055 percent increase in cases in the UK alone. Criminals exploit wireless carrier protocols to gain unauthorized access to victims’ phone numbers, typically allowing them to bypass two-factor authentication and gain entry to financial and personal accounts. In one notable case, a similar operation resulted in losses of $1.8 million from multiple victims.
In response to the rising threat, major carriers have implemented additional security measures. AT&T recently launched a Wireless Account Lock feature specifically designed to prevent unauthorized SIM swaps and account takeovers. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has also released comprehensive mobile security guidelines that address these vulnerabilities.
The investigation remains active as the Port St. Lucie Police Department continues efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators involved in this case.
