Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport and the digital industry association Bitkom have signed a memorandum of understanding on the successful implementation of the EUDI Wallet together with more than 75 companies and organizations. The agreement is intended to accelerate deployment and adoption of the European Digital Identity Wallet in Germany.
In its announcement, Bitkom explains that the EUDI Wallet is designed to allow citizens to store official documents such as identity cards and driving licences securely on a smartphone. Signatories to the memorandum commit to adapting their processes so that the EUDI Wallet can be used in practice for identification, age verification, and the presentation of digital credentials in both public services and private sector offerings.
The list of participants includes organizations from banking, transport, telecommunications, technology, and identity services. Companies named in the memorandum include Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Bahn, Lufthansa Group, Mastercard, N26, SAP, Vodafone, Bundesdruckerei, and IDnow. Bitkom presents the agreement as a step toward ensuring that the wallet can be used broadly in everyday scenarios once it becomes available under the eIDAS 2 framework.
Germany’s national EUDI Wallet project is managed by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and implemented by an interdisciplinary team coordinated by the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation. The project aims to deliver a wallet that is interoperable across the EU and that supports secure storage and presentation of digital identity credentials offline and online. The memorandum was signed in the context of a summit on European digital sovereignty hosted in Berlin.
