Google is developing an enhanced Identity Check capability for Android that uses Wear OS smartwatches to strengthen phone security while improving user convenience. The feature expands upon the Identity Check system introduced in Android 15, which implements additional security measures when phones are used outside trusted locations.
Analysis of recent Google Play Services beta versions 25.29.31 and 25.31.30 reveals that the system will allow a connected and unlocked smartwatch to serve as a trust signal for the phone. When a user’s smartwatch is nearby, connected, and unlocked on their wrist, the phone recognizes this as verification of user control, reducing the frequency of biometric or PIN authentication required for accessing sensitive settings or applications outside trusted zones.
The enhancement follows Google’s recent efforts to strengthen Android security through multiple authentication factors. The company has already addressed several Wear OS authentication challenges and has been expanding the integration between Android phones and wearable devices.
The implementation allows users outside trusted locations to authenticate using either biometrics or a PIN when a connected smartwatch is present. Without a connected watch, the phone defaults to requiring fingerprint or face unlock verification. Rather than eliminating traditional security measures, the feature creates an optimal balance between protection and usability by incorporating the smartwatch as an additional authentication factor.
Code strings discovered in the beta releases indicate plans for an “Identity Check V2” that could extend this verification approach beyond sensitive settings to other applications using biometric authentication. “With your watch connected, Identity Check automatically recognizes you while maintaining your security even when you’re not in a trusted location,” reads one code string.
Additional code documentation explains the authentication workflow: “If you have a connected watch, you can use either biometrics or your PIN. If you don’t have a connected watch, you’ll be required to use Fingerprint or Face Unlock.”
The development matches broader industry trends toward continuous authentication through wearable devices, offering a more seamless security experience while maintaining robust protection against unauthorized access.
