Identity verification provider iDenfy has integrated Smart-ID, the mobile authentication and digital signing tool used by approximately 3.75 million people across the Baltic states, into its verification platform, giving businesses a document-free path to verify customers using the mobile credentials already on their phones.
Smart-ID is a smartphone-native identity product that lets users in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia authenticate to online services and sign documents with legal equivalence to handwritten signatures under EU eIDAS regulations. Roughly 1.6 million users are in Lithuania, 1 million in Latvia, and 730,000 in Estonia. The integration means iDenfy’s clients can now accept Smart-ID’s two-step PIN entry or biometric confirmation as a verification method, skipping the traditional step of scanning a passport or national ID card.
For mobile identity verification providers, the move reflects a broader shift: as Nordic and Baltic governments push for cross-border digital ID interoperability, platforms that can accept mobile-native eID credentials alongside document scans gain a competitive edge in the region. Smart-ID holds eIDAS High assurance certification, the highest level under the EU’s electronic identification framework.
That certification positions Smart-ID within the regulatory trajectory set by eIDAS 2.0, which requires all 27 EU member states to make at least one digital identity wallet available to citizens by the end of 2026. Banks, payment institutions, and electronic money providers will be required to accept wallet-based credentials for Strong Customer Authentication, creating new demand for verification platforms that support mobile credential flows.
iDenfy, which added NFC-based biometric data reading from ePassports and smart card chips, has been expanding beyond traditional document scanning. The company launched a KYC plugin for Shopify merchants and serves clients in financial services, cryptocurrency, and telecommunications across more than 200 countries.
