The development builds upon Malta’s recent progress in digital identity verification, exemplified by the Bank of Valletta’s enhanced authentication system launched in 2024.

The initiative supports Malta’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a leader in financial technology innovation and blockchain adoption, following earlier partnerships such as the collaboration between Blockpass IDN and Malta’s Blockchain Advisory to develop regulatory standards.
The digital wallet system is being developed alongside evolving global payment trends, including the integration of super apps and alternative credit data usage. The implementation will need to meet the EU’s Digital Identity Wallet standards, which have already undergone successful cross-border trials involving multiple member states.
