Meta has announced the implementation of passkey support for Facebook and Messenger, marking a significant shift in how users authenticate their accounts. The feature, rolled out on June 18, 2025, replaces traditional passwords with a more secure passwordless authentication method, building on Meta’s earlier efforts to strengthen its security infrastructure.

The new passkey feature is available across both iOS and Android devices, providing broad compatibility for smartphone and tablet users. The integration extends to Meta’s Messenger application, enabling users to log in using either biometric authentication or a PIN code. The expansion follows Meta’s previous implementation of biometric authentication for Messenger on iOS devices, which demonstrated the company’s commitment to enhanced security measures.

Passkeys use cryptographic authentication to eliminate the need for conventional passwords. Instead, users authenticate through their device’s built-in security features, such as fingerprint sensors, facial recognition systems, or PIN numbers. The implementation is part of Meta’s participation in the FIDO Alliance, an open-source consortium dedicated to reducing password dependence in digital security. The change matches similar commitments from tech giants Apple, Google, and Microsoft to enable cross-platform FIDO authentication.

The technology provides enhanced security benefits compared to traditional password systems. Passkeys demonstrate greater resistance to hacking attempts and are not vulnerable to common password-based attack methods. The security upgrade comes at a crucial time, as evidenced by recent data breaches affecting major platforms, including a massive exposure of 184 million records in May 2025.

The development reflects broader industry movements toward passwordless authentication. Technology companies including Google and Apple have made similar advances, with Google having implemented passwordless support for FIDO sign-in standards in Android and Chrome. Microsoft has also announced plans to phase out passwords completely by August 2025, demonstrating the industry-wide shift toward more secure authentication methods.

The integration of passkeys into both Facebook and Messenger represents Meta’s commitment to modernizing its authentication systems while maintaining compatibility across its platform ecosystem. The implementation follows the FIDO Alliance’s updated design guidelines for optimizing passkey user experience, ensuring a seamless transition for users moving away from traditional passwords.
