Microsoft has announced new age verification requirements for Xbox users in the United Kingdom, set to become mandatory in early 2026. The initiative addresses compliance requirements under the UK’s Online Safety Act, which became law in 2023 and stands as one of the most comprehensive attempts to regulate online safety globally.

The verification system, currently optional for UK Xbox users aged 18 and over, will become mandatory in early 2026. Users who do not complete the verification process will face restrictions on various social functionalities, including Looking for Group (LFG) features, custom clubs, and communication capabilities beyond their friend lists.

The restrictions will also affect party functionality, game invites outside of established friend connections, and limit user-generated content in the Activity Feed to friends only. Additionally, integration with Discord and broadcasting to Twitch will be disabled for unverified users, following similar age verification implementations by other gaming and social platforms in the UK.

Core gaming features will remain accessible regardless of verification status, including game purchases, gameplay, and achievement earning capabilities. Microsoft has implemented multiple verification methods, offering users the choice of uploading government-issued ID, using age estimation technology, mobile provider verification, or credit card checks. The multi-option approach matches the company’s broader identity verification strategy, which includes its recent implementation of passkey authentication across its services.

Users can initiate the verification process through several channels, including scanning a QR code on their mobile device or visiting Microsoft’s dedicated verification webpage. The company emphasizes that the verification process uses industry-standard encryption, and collected data is not stored or used beyond the initial verification, addressing privacy concerns that have emerged from similar implementations across the industry.

“Age verification is a new feature being introduced for players logging into an Xbox experience with Microsoft accounts based in the UK,” said Microsoft. “It helps ensure that we can continue to provide players on our platform with age-appropriate experiences and keep the Xbox community safe.”

The implementation follows a broader international trend toward stricter online age verification requirements. Australia has announced similar measures, requiring major platforms to implement age verification by 2025 with substantial penalties for non-compliance.

The company has noted that the UK implementation will serve as a learning opportunity, stating, “We hope to learn from our UK program and roll out age verification processes to more regions in the future.”

The initiative has highlighted industry-wide challenges in age verification, including attempts to circumvent facial recognition systems using digital face models from video games. These challenges have led to ongoing developments in verification technology, with companies like Jumio reporting on the adequacy of current age verification methods used by online platforms.
