Okta Runs Limited Beta for In-App U.S. mDL Verification Using Verifiable Digital Credentials

Okta is running an "Okta Digital ID Verification Beta," a limited-availability program aimed at verifying government-issued verifiable digital credentials. Okta says the beta is "specifically designed for non-production and test environments," and presents it as a way for organizations to experiment with credential verification flows before any broader productization.

Okta says the beta "currently supports US mobile driver's licenses (mDLs)" and is intended for transactional or ad hoc checks carried out within an application. Use cases described by Okta include age gating, step-up authentication, and requests for specific attributes to support data minimization or progressive profiling.

At this stage, Okta describes the beta as operating separately from its Okta and Auth0 product lines. Okta says participants get access to an administrative dashboard, plus APIs and SDKs for building and testing integrations, with the emphasis on technical evaluation and end-to-end demo work rather than production deployments.

Okta's roadmap for the beta includes planned support for Google ID Pass, Apple Digital ID, and EU PIDs (European Union Personal Identification Documents). The company's description suggests the program is meant to surface how application developers and identity teams incorporate wallet-held credential verification into consumer and workforce flows, including attribute-based requests and one-time verification scenarios.

Okta also lays out expectations for who should apply. The company says ideal participants are existing Okta or Auth0 customers with a clear verification use case, the ability to commit engineering time to a complete demo, and a willingness to provide structured feedback through regular check-ins. Okta says the beta is US-only and limited to non-production testing.

The announcement points to a model where identity checks are completed using wallet-held credentials at the point of need inside an application, instead of repeated document capture. It follows the W3C's release of the Digital Credentials API draft, with Okta's Tim Cappalli serving as one of the specification's editors.
