OPay, one of Nigeria’s leading fintech platforms, has launched a comprehensive suite of advanced security features in 2024 designed to strengthen digital trust and protect users against fraud, mobile theft, and unauthorized account access. The security upgrades arrive at a crucial time, as Nigeria faces increasing threats from sophisticated mobile malware targeting financial applications and digital payment platforms.

The platform has introduced Face ID verification, establishing itself as a pioneer in Nigeria’s fintech industry with this biometric authentication feature. The system requires facial verification for large transactions and transfers made late at night. The implementation supports broader efforts to strengthen digital identity verification in Nigeria, where the National Identity Management Commission has been working to improve its identification infrastructure. Elizabeth Wang, OPay’s Chief Commercial Officer, indicates that the Face ID feature has been operational for ten weeks and is already demonstrating effectiveness in fund protection.

Among the new security measures is the USSD Lock, an emergency feature enabling customers to immediately freeze their accounts or cards if their phone is lost or compromised. The feature is particularly important given recent concerns about security risks associated with phone number recycling in Nigeria. The platform has also implemented Location Guard, which monitors and restricts account activity based on the user’s geographic location to prevent unauthorized access.

Additional security features include the Large Transaction Shield and NightGuard, providing enhanced protection for high-value and nighttime transactions. The features are integrated into OPay’s broader system of multiple security measures designed to protect customers across various transaction scenarios, following similar security strategies implemented by other Nigerian fintech providers like PalmPay’s multi-layered security approach.

The company’s security innovations have received industry recognition, including the Fintech Security Innovation of the Year award at the 2025 BAFI Awards, acknowledging their development of seven advanced security products. OPay was also named Mobile Payment Solutions Provider of the Year for successfully combining scale, safety, and user-friendly features.

Several public figures have endorsed these security upgrades, including actress Funke Akindele and content creators Brother Shaggi, Layi Wasabi, and Brain Jotter, who have highlighted the importance of real-time security solutions in strengthening Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem.

“This recognition at the 2025 BAFI Awards is a reflection of our stand as a brand that goes beyond banking — combining innovation, security, and inclusion to power the financial lives of tens of millions,” said IK Odiase, Head of Partnerships at OPay. “This is an encouragement for us to do more.”
