Pakistan’s National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA) has completed the digitization of its identity card and document services through the Pak ID mobile application, marking a significant advancement in the country’s e-governance capabilities. The milestone follows NADRA’s implementation of enhanced security features earlier this year to protect citizens’ digital identities.
The Pak ID app allows citizens to apply for identity cards, family registration certificates (FRCs), and other official documents from their smartphones. Users can complete biometric verification, upload documents, and track applications through the platform. The system processes more than 10,000 cases daily, showing substantial operational capacity. The digital transformation builds upon NADRA’s initial launch of dematerialized ID cards for smartphones, which established the foundation for today’s comprehensive digital services.
The application has gained widespread adoption, with over 1.2 million applications processed in a three-month period and more than 10 million citizens downloading the app. The rapid uptake has contributed to a 45 percent increase in digital applications for identity services, demonstrating the success of NADRA’s broader digital transformation strategy.
Version 5.0.5 of the Pak ID app introduces new features, including the option to have ID cards delivered to the nearest NADRA Centre without courier charges and biometric verification capabilities for ownership transfer of Islamabad-registered vehicles. The update also includes an enhanced ID Vault feature for document access, building upon the secure storage technologies increasingly common in digital identity solutions.
NADRA has expanded its international reach by establishing new facilitation counters in Canada, Italy, Bahrain, and Jordan. These locations provide identity and documentation services to Pakistani citizens abroad, eliminating the need to return to Pakistan for these services. The expansion follows the successful implementation of enhanced biometric security features for overseas Pakistanis using the Pak ID app.
The organization is also implementing a digital pension system featuring a “Proof of Life” function that enables pensioners to verify their status electronically rather than in person. The system, scheduled for complete implementation in 2026, matches similar biometric verification systems for welfare recipients implemented in other regions, showing NADRA’s commitment to global digital identity standards.
