Paytm has launched a new customized UPI ID feature that allows users to create personalized alphanumeric payment identifiers, enhancing privacy by eliminating the need to expose phone numbers or email addresses during transactions. The feature enables users to create unique digital identities such as “yourname@ptaxis” or “yourname@pthdfc” for their payment accounts, supporting India’s broader efforts to combat UPI payment fraud.
The service was initially rolled out for Yes Bank and Axis Bank customers, and has now expanded to include HDFC Bank and State Bank of India (SBI) users. Once activated, the customized UPI ID permanently replaces the traditional phone number-based identifier, providing continuous privacy protection for users. The development comes after Axis Bank’s recent implementation of enhanced digital authentication measures for its banking services.
The new feature marks a significant advancement in digital payment security measures, helping to mitigate risks associated with exposed phone numbers during transactions. The enhancement supports the National Payments Corporation of India’s broader initiatives to enhance UPI security, including the development of facial recognition authentication for transactions. Google Pay is also developing similar functionality, which is currently in testing phases but not yet widely available to users.
To implement a personalized UPI ID through Paytm, users can access the feature through their profile settings. The process involves opening the Paytm app, accessing the Profile icon, selecting “UPI & Payment Settings,” and choosing the option to create a personalized UPI ID. Users can then input their preferred alphanumeric identifier to replace their phone number-based ID.
The enhancement is part of India’s broader initiatives to strengthen security and privacy in digital financial transactions, addressing growing requirements for data protection in mobile payments. The feature complements upcoming Reserve Bank of India regulations for digital payment authentication and represents a significant step forward in protecting user privacy while maintaining the convenience of UPI transactions.
