A new pilot program in Poland is enabling ATM withdrawals via mobile phones without PIN entry, through a collaboration between Mastercard, NCR Atleos, and ITCARD. The initiative integrates Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method (CDCVM) technology into ATMs to authenticate users through their mobile devices rather than traditional PIN entry, supporting Mastercard’s broader efforts to advance biometric payment authentication.
The system allows users to authenticate themselves on their mobile phones using biometrics or other mobile wallet security features before tapping their device on the ATM. The process eliminates the need for both physical cards and PIN entry at the ATM terminal, streamlining the withdrawal process. The approach complements Mastercard’s recent initiatives in biometric authentication, including the Payment Passkey Service launched in Latin America, which similarly leverages device-based biometrics for secure transactions.
CDCVM verifies cardholder identity directly on the mobile device, providing an alternative to traditional PIN-based verification. The technology has gained significant traction in recent years, with major payment providers and device manufacturers implementing it across various platforms to enhance security while improving user experience.
While contactless ATM technology has been deployed across several European countries, including Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Austria, these implementations typically still require PIN entry after mobile authentication. The Polish pilot program represents a departure from this approach by removing the PIN step entirely, marking a significant advancement in contactless banking technology.
“We’re redefining ATM withdrawals in Poland—offering a faster, secure, and seamless experience. With CDCVM, using an ATM becomes as simple as tapping your phone…” said a Mastercard representative.
The initiative reflects the ongoing evolution of payment technologies and ATM functionality, as financial institutions work to integrate mobile-first solutions into traditional banking infrastructure. The development follows a broader trend of financial institutions adopting contactless and biometric solutions, particularly in response to increasing consumer demand for touchless payment options. The pilot program represents one of several developments in the modernization of ATM networks to accommodate changing consumer preferences and technological capabilities, including Mastercard’s involvement in the European Union’s Digital Identity Wallet initiative.
