Qualcomm has unveiled the Dragonwing Q-6690, marking a significant advancement in enterprise mobile processing technology as the first processor to feature fully integrated UHF RFID capabilities. The development comes as the RAIN Alliance launches its initiative to standardize RFID reader integration in smartphones, representing a major step forward in bringing RFID technology directly to mobile devices. The new processor combines RFID, AI, and advanced wireless technologies into a unified platform targeting enterprise applications across retail, logistics, and manufacturing sectors.
The Dragonwing Q-6690’s integrated UHF RFID functionality eliminates the need for external RFID readers, enabling streamlined implementation of access control, asset tracking, inventory management, and product authentication systems. The processor delivers comprehensive wireless connectivity through integrated 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and ultra-wideband technologies. The multi-technology approach builds on recent innovations in UWB-based payment and advertising solutions, offering enhanced precision for proximity-based applications.
The platform’s embedded AI capabilities enhance device intelligence and responsiveness for operational analytics, while its scalable architecture allows deployment across various form factors, from rugged handheld devices to retail point-of-sale systems and smart kiosks. The processor supports software-configurable feature packs that can be updated over the air to accommodate different computing, multimedia, camera, and peripheral requirements.
“The Dragonwing Q-6690 combines integrated RFID, AI, and next-gen wireless capabilities in a single, scalable platform, designed to accelerate innovation across industries including retail, logistics, and manufacturing,” said Art Miller, vice president and head of retail at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. Miller also noted the platform’s adaptability to evolving customer expectations, particularly in retail applications ranging from smart kiosks to real-time inventory analytics.
Several major OEMs have already committed to implementing the new platform, including Zebra, Honeywell, Urovo, HMD Secure, and CipherLab. HMD Secure’s involvement is particularly notable, as the company has recently gained attention for its implementation of advanced biometric authentication solutions in mobile devices. Commercial devices featuring the Dragonwing Q-6690 are expected to reach the market in the coming months.
