Riot Games has introduced a mobile verification beta system through the Riot Mobile app as part of its largest anti-smurfing initiative to date for VALORANT. The beta program, which launched on September 16, 2025, specifically targets high-risk accounts, including players ranked Ascendant and above in North America, Latin America, Brazil, and Korea, as well as accounts suspected of sharing or boosting activities. The initiative responds to growing industry concerns about account security and identity verification in competitive gaming environments.
The verification system requires a one-time multi-factor authentication (MFA) setup for affected players to continue participating in ranked matches. Players must complete the MFA process by downloading the Riot Mobile app, logging in, scanning a QR code from their Riot account management page, and enabling MFA notifications for login approvals. The verification process aims to ensure individual account ownership and reduce unauthorized account usage, building on security practices already established in other gaming platforms.
The initiative goes beyond phone verification, incorporating advanced behavioral analysis tools that examine gameplay metrics including headshot rates, reaction times, and movement patterns to identify experienced players using new or low-rank accounts. These behavioral monitoring systems represent a growing trend in gaming authentication, combining traditional security measures with sophisticated pattern recognition. Hardware-based identification techniques are also employed to track accounts across different login sessions, creating additional barriers for those attempting to circumvent detection.
Starting with patch 11.09, Riot has implemented stricter enforcement policies, including bans for accounts identified as purchased or involved in boosting services. The measures are part of a comprehensive strategy combining verification methods, behavioral monitoring, and enforcement actions to maintain competitive integrity. The strategy matches broader industry efforts to combat fraud and account sharing in online gaming platforms.
“The mobile verification requirement is directly aimed at Ascendant-tier players and up, as well as suspicious activity accounts,” Riot stated in its announcement. “For the quickest hassle-free login, we suggest downloading Riot Mobile on your preferred mobile device as it can serve as your MFA authenticator,” the company’s support documentation notes.
While Riot acknowledges that mobile verification will not completely eliminate smurfing and account sharing, the company views this system as a significant advancement in their ongoing efforts to promote fair play in VALORANT. The implementation follows successful mobile verification systems deployed by other major gaming companies, including Sony’s PlayStation network, which has demonstrated the effectiveness of mobile-based authentication in gaming environments.
