The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has implemented a new biometric system for social grant recipients, with mandatory biometric enrollment beginning September 1, 2025. The system requires both digital facial-recognition photos and fingerprints from new applicants and individuals updating their payment details, building upon SASSA’s earlier biometric verification initiatives for Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants.
The biometric system strengthens fraud detection capabilities and maintains the integrity of SASSA’s grant distribution process. Through biometric verification, the agency works to ensure that only eligible individuals receive social grants. The initiative is part of South Africa’s broader digital transformation efforts, including the development of a Citizen Super App for government services.
For individuals applying for Older Person Grants, required documentation includes an official RSA Identity Document (preferably a smart ID card), a certified three-month bank statement, proof of residence via a recent utility bill, comprehensive documentation of income and assets, proof of marital status, and private pension declaration where applicable.
The October 2025 payment schedule indicates that Old-Age Grant disbursements will occur on Thursday, October 2. Recipients over 75 years of age will receive R2,340, while those between 60-74 years will receive R2,320.
Initial implementation of the biometric system has resulted in some payment delays for beneficiaries who have not completed the verification process. However, pensioners have generally responded positively to the new system, viewing it as a measure to secure their benefits and prevent unauthorized access to their grants. The implementation follows successful biometric verification deployments in other sectors, such as MTN South Africa’s nationwide rollout of biometric identification to combat fraud in its retail network.
