Major technology companies are accelerating their transition to passkeys as a more secure alternative to traditional passwords, building on years of collaborative work through the FIDO Alliance. The shift represents a significant change in how users authenticate themselves across devices and services, addressing longstanding security vulnerabilities associated with password-based systems.
Apple has implemented passkey support across its ecosystem of devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Users can now authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID instead of typing passwords, and the company recently introduced cross-platform passkey import/export capabilities to enhance user convenience across different operating systems.
Google’s research indicates that 61 percent of users face security risks from traditional passwords, highlighting the need for more secure authentication methods. The company has responded by intensifying its passkey adoption efforts in 2024, including adding new features to its Password Manager such as bulk deletion capabilities for both passwords and passkeys.
Microsoft has announced a comprehensive plan to phase out passwords entirely by August 2025. The company’s Authenticator app will introduce native passkey support in mid-January 2025, cease supporting passwords in June 2025, with complete password functionality ending in July 2025. Users will need to transition to passkeys using biometric authentication methods such as Windows Hello facial recognition or fingerprint verification for their Microsoft accounts.
The adoption of passkey technology extends beyond major tech companies. PayPal, eBay, Dashlane, Shopify, Best Buy, and TikTok are implementing passkey login capabilities, with some making it the default authentication method. Even social media platforms like Meta have rolled out passkey support for Facebook and Messenger, demonstrating the technology’s growing mainstream acceptance.
Passkeys use public key cryptography to create unique digital credentials for each user account. The credentials are stored securely on users’ devices and can only be accessed through biometric verification or device PINs, eliminating the vulnerabilities associated with traditional passwords. The technology builds upon the FIDO2 authentication standard, which has been widely adopted across the technology industry.
