The Transportation Security Administration has implemented a new touchless identity verification system for PreCheck travelers at 15 major U.S. airports, including facilities serving New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Las Vegas. The expansion builds on successful pilot programs and represents a significant advancement in the TSA’s broader $5.5 billion modernization initiative.
To use the touchless verification system, travelers must be enrolled in TSA PreCheck and have their Known Traveler Number integrated with their airline’s mobile application. When arriving at the security checkpoint, travelers present their linked digital boarding pass, and a facial recognition scan verifies their identity. While the system eliminates the need to display physical identification to TSA officers, travelers are still required to carry a Real ID or valid passport as a backup verification method. The requirement is part of the TSA’s upcoming REAL ID mandate, which takes effect May 7, 2025.
The technology has been integrated with several major carriers, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. American Airlines has been particularly active in this space, having previously piloted mobile ID solutions for expedited security screening. The system aims to enhance operational efficiency at security checkpoints, particularly during high-volume travel periods such as holiday weekends.
“TSA is expanding this Touchless ID system. They’re trying to speed travelers through that security checkpoint line there and try to speed up that process… a facial scan at the TSA PreCheck lane confirms their identity,” said a TSA representative. “No need to show ID. But travelers are still required to carry a Real ID or a valid passport.”
The touchless verification initiative represents part of the TSA’s broader strategy to modernize airport security procedures and enhance the passenger experience through technological innovation. The rollout complements the agency’s expanding digital ID ecosystem, which includes support for mobile driver’s licenses in multiple states and integration with digital wallet platforms. The system is designed to reduce physical contact points while maintaining security standards.
