Foreign nationals living in the Tyrol region of Austria can now get ID Austria, the country’s national digital identity credential, from three new district offices, no longer having to travel to the provincial police headquarters in Innsbruck to enroll.
As of April 1, 2026, the district administrative offices in Imst, Reutte, and Lienz are authorized to issue ID Austria to non-Austrian residents. Previously, foreign nationals in Tyrol had very few enrollment options: the Innsbruck police headquarters, select tax offices, and a small number of municipalities. The new locations are Bezirkshauptmannschaften, the regional government offices that handle everything from passport applications to vehicle registration, making them a practical and familiar place for residents to get their digital credential.
If you want to enroll at the Imst district office, you will need to book an appointment in advance through Tyrol’s online scheduling portal. The Reutte and Lienz offices are walk-in friendly, no appointment needed.
ID Austria is the credential you use to log into Austrian government services digitally: filing taxes through FinanzOnline, accessing your social insurance records, and interacting with public administration without showing up in person. Austria has also introduced a fully digital proof of ID within the connected eAusweise app, meaning the credential extends beyond government portals to serve as a mobile identity document.
Tyrol is one of Austria’s strongest-performing regions for ID Austria adoption. More than 65 percent of residents in the province now hold the credential, above the national average of around 61 percent. Tyrol Governor Anton Mattle cited the expansion as part of the province’s broader reform program, which lists digital accessibility as a core goal.
For foreign nationals who have been putting off enrollment due to the limited access points, the expanded network is the practical nudge to get set up. ID Austria has been one of Europe’s more advanced mobile identity deployments, compatible with eIDAS and usable across EU services. With more enrollment sites available, getting access to those capabilities is now considerably simpler for Tyrol’s non-Austrian residents.
