The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new initiative called the Scheme for Innovation and Technology Association with Aadhaar (SITAA) to enhance the security of its biometric authentication system. The program specifically targets the development of AI-powered solutions to detect deepfakes, mask attacks, spoofing, and other presentation attacks in Aadhaar face authentication, building upon UIDAI’s extensive experience managing over 150 billion authentication transactions.
The initiative seeks participation from startups, academic institutions, and industry players to address three main technical challenges: face liveness detection for preventing various types of spoofing, presentation attack detection (PAD) solutions that comply with privacy requirements and Aadhaar APIs, and contactless fingerprint authentication capabilities for mobile and edge devices. The expansion comes as AI-generated deepfakes have emerged as a significant threat to authentication systems globally.
UIDAI has established partnerships with the MeitY Startup Hub (MSH) and NASSCOM to support the program’s implementation. MSH will provide technical mentoring and incubation support, while NASSCOM will facilitate industry collaboration and global outreach. Successful participants will receive support from these partners to develop their innovations into practical solutions.
“The SITAA pilot opens the door for innovators to translate ideas into practical solutions that enhance the security, reliability, and efficiency of India’s digital identity framework,” said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). “Startups, academic institutions, and industry partners have the opportunity to contribute to building a future-ready, self-reliant digital identity ecosystem.”
The program requirements specify that solutions must be privacy-compliant, scalable, and interoperable with existing Aadhaar APIs. They should also support both edge and server deployments and demonstrate effectiveness across diverse demographics and devices. The initiative builds upon recent expansions of Aadhaar face authentication to private sector applications, necessitating enhanced security measures.
Applications for participation in the pilot challenges will remain open until November 15, 2025. The program supports India’s broader digital public infrastructure goals and addresses security needs within the Aadhaar ecosystem, which serves as a cornerstone of India’s identity infrastructure. The development comes as India continues to expand its biometric authentication capabilities across various services, including UPI payments and government services.
