The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to launch a next-generation e-Aadhaar mobile application by December 2025, introducing significant advances in digital identity management for India’s billion-plus residents. The initiative continues UIDAI’s ongoing modernization efforts to streamline identity verification services across the country.
The new application will enable users to update critical personal information including name, residential address, date of birth, and phone number directly from their smartphones. The functionality eliminates the requirement to visit Aadhaar Seva Kendras for most updates, with biometric authentication remaining the only service necessitating in-person visits. The digital transformation builds upon UIDAI’s recent initiatives to make identity services more accessible, particularly in remote areas.
Technical features of the application include artificial intelligence and Face ID technology integration for biometric authentication, along with built-in QR code verification capabilities for validating Aadhaar details both online and offline. Users will have the ability to instantly download their Aadhaar card within the application. The advancement in facial recognition technology comes as Indian telecom providers have faced scrutiny for implementing similar systems without proper authorization.
“The mobile application is most likely to arrive by the end of this year. By integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Face ID technology, the app would deliver secure and seamless digital Aadhaar services to users across India,” said a government official associated with the project.
The platform features enhanced privacy controls and a user-friendly interface designed to minimize paperwork while maintaining security. The application architecture emphasizes data portability and user control over identity information, supporting UIDAI’s commitment to data protection and user privacy.
The digital transformation of Aadhaar services aims to reduce administrative processes and improve service delivery efficiency, particularly benefiting residents in remote areas. While the application enables most updates to be completed digitally, changes to biometric data such as fingerprints or iris scans will continue to require verification at enrollment centers to maintain security standards. The approach mirrors the existing protocol for children’s biometric updates, which requires in-person verification at specific age milestones.
