Vi Turns Its Mobile Network Into an Identity Layer for Meta Apps in India

Vodafone Idea has begun verifying its Vi subscribers to Meta’s apps directly through its mobile network, letting WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram confirm a user’s phone number in the background instead of sending a one-time password to the handset. The Silent Mobile Verification service treats the SIM and the device as the credential, and it covers the full span of account moments, registration, mobile-number validation, login and re-login, account recovery, and security checks, for a subscriber base the operator put at roughly 198.5 million as of April 2026.

The mechanism keeps the verification on the phone and on the network rather than in a transmitted code. While a Vi subscriber is connected over the operator’s mobile network, a verification request from one of the Meta apps is confirmed by the network itself, checking that the device and SIM match the number being claimed. The user neither waits for nor enters a code. The approach builds on GSMA Open Gateway, the telecom industry’s standardized way of exposing network capabilities such as number verification to applications, the same framework India’s major operators have used for a joint anti-fraud network service.

Moving the check into the network is as much a security decision as a convenience one. A one-time password is a secret in transit, and SMS codes are routinely defeated by SIM-swap fraud, phishing pages that relay a code in real time, and social-engineering scams that talk a user into reading the number aloud. Binding verification to the SIM and device removes that transmittable secret, so there is no code to intercept or extract while the friction of manual entry disappears for the legitimate user.

The model reflects a wider shift toward treating the mobile network as identity infrastructure. Telin and IPification have built an OTP-free verification service that authenticates users silently across more than 40 networks, and India has separately launched a mobile-number verification system to fight payment fraud, both pointing to the same idea: the connection a phone already holds can stand in for a code.

For Meta, wiring verification into an Indian operator’s network extends the pattern to one of its largest markets, where Vi’s subscriber count sets the ceiling on reach. The silent check runs only for Vi subscribers on the operator’s network, with the carrier performing the verification that the Meta apps consume in place of an SMS round trip.

Silent Mobile Verification is being enabled for Vi subscribers across WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
