Accenture and NTT DOCOMO GLOBAL say they are rolling out a Universal Wallet Infrastructure (UWI) offering aimed at giving organizations a common backbone for digital-wallet deployments, rather than requiring each issuer or verifier to build separate systems. The UWI is powered by FaceTec’s 3D identity verification technology.

The partners describe UWI as an infrastructure layer that supports core wallet functions such as credential issuance, storage, presentation, and verification across different organizations. In their framing, the goal is interoperability across sectors and jurisdictions without creating a single wallet product or a centralized identity database.

Accenture says the rollout is starting with an initial group of early adopters operating under letters of intent. The companies position this phase as a way to validate operating models and core capabilities before widening adoption and adding functionality.

While the launch materials talk broadly about digital trust, the architecture described aligns with credential-based identity approaches associated with modern wallet ecosystems, including selective disclosure and cross-organization verification of attributes.

The move is notable for shifting attention from a wallet app to the plumbing underneath wallets. Whether UWI can bridge competing implementations and standards, and whether it attracts adoption beyond a limited partner ecosystem, will be key measures of its impact.
