The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has integrated its services with India’s DigiLocker app, enabling EPFO members to access verified documents and streamline their service interactions. The integration allows members to directly retrieve verified documents from DigiLocker when submitting Joint Declarations, eliminating the need for physical documentation. The development builds upon EPFO’s recent implementation of Aadhaar-based face authentication for Universal Account Number (UAN) generation, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to digital transformation.
The new functionality marks a significant advancement in India’s digital governance infrastructure. EPFO members can now pull authenticated documents directly from their DigiLocker accounts during the Joint Declaration submission process, reducing paperwork and ensuring document authenticity. DigiLocker has emerged as a cornerstone of India’s digital identity ecosystem, with recent expansions including the integration of home loan certificates and its adoption by other countries like Sri Lanka.
The integration is part of the broader Digital India program’s digital governance initiative. The system is supported by multiple government institutions, including the Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), National Informatics Centre (NIC), and National Institute of Smart Governance (NISG). MeitY has been particularly active in expanding digital identity services, recently extending Aadhaar authentication capabilities to the private sector.
The initiative works in concert with other digital transformation efforts, such as the eShram portal and mobile app, which provide multilingual access and real-time information about welfare schemes to workers. These tools collectively contribute to India’s digital governance framework, which has gained international recognition for innovation and scalability. The framework includes initiatives like the AI-powered e-Aadhaar app for digital identity updates.
The integration complements existing digital tools like e-Sign and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), which are fundamental components of India’s digital governance ecosystem.
