The FIDO Alliance has unveiled its Passkey Index, a comprehensive report examining the implementation and effectiveness of passkeys among major online service providers. The report reveals that over 3 billion passkeys are currently securing consumer accounts, marking significant adoption of this authentication technology in less than three years since major platforms like Google, Microsoft, and PayPal began implementing the standard.
The index shows that organizations implementing passkeys have observed a 93 percent sign-in success rate, more than doubling the effectiveness of traditional authentication methods. The data also shows a 73 percent reduction in login times, demonstrating substantial improvements in user experience and efficiency. These results support the FIDO Alliance’s long-standing mission to reduce reliance on vulnerable password-based authentication systems.
The report includes data from several major technology companies and service providers, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, PayPal, Target, and TikTok, who have deployed passkeys over the past one to three years. The implementations have resulted in up to 81 percent fewer login-related help desk incidents, indicating significant operational cost savings. The adoption trend has been further accelerated by regulatory measures, such as the recent mandate from the Philippines Central Bank requiring FIDO passwordless authentication by 2026.
“We spent the past dozen years or so contemplating how to prevent bots from authenticating, and now we have to figure out how to enable them to authenticate,” said FIDO Alliance Executive Director Andrew Shikiar during his keynote presentation. The statement reflects the evolving landscape of digital authentication, where artificial intelligence and automated systems are becoming increasingly prevalent in online interactions.
The Alliance is currently developing new standards and certification programs for digital credentialing, aimed at advancing the digitization of identity documents and secure mobile credentials. Building on its existing certification programs, these initiatives will help organizations implement more secure authentication methods while maintaining user privacy. The organization has identified the elimination of knowledge-based recovery methods and improvement of user experience as key priorities moving forward, addressing common vulnerabilities in traditional authentication systems.
