Google has introduced a new Advanced Protection Program for Android devices, building on its security platform first launched in 2017. The program offers enhanced security features specifically designed for high-risk users such as journalists, executives, and enterprise employees. The program, available on Android 16 and above devices, requires manual activation as it is disabled by default.
The Advanced Protection Program can be accessed through different paths depending on the device. Pixel phone users can enable it via Settings > Security and privacy, while other Android device users will find it under Settings > Google > All Services.
The program implements Google’s most rigorous security protocols through a single toggle switch. Key features include stricter app verification processes that limit sideloading – which supports Google’s upcoming 2026 requirements for developer verification. The program also integrates with hardware-based security keys for enhanced authentication, following the industry’s broader shift toward FIDO2 passkeys and passwordless authentication. Additional features include advanced spam and phishing detection systems, and proactive vulnerability scanning that extends beyond conventional antivirus capabilities.
While available to all users, the program particularly addresses security needs in corporate IT environments. The system strengthens account recovery processes and reduces phishing risks, making it especially valuable for individuals handling sensitive information. The enhancement comes at a crucial time, as recent reports have identified sophisticated phishing services capable of bypassing traditional multi-factor authentication.
The Advanced Protection Program works in conjunction with Google Play Protect, which uses machine learning and cloud-based verification to scan apps for malicious behavior. While Play Protect provides continuous app scanning and removal of harmful applications, Advanced Protection adds stricter controls and hardware-based security measures. Recent updates to Play Protect have significantly enhanced its capabilities, with the system blocking numerous security threats and implementing automated security features.
“The program activates a suite of Google’s toughest security protocols behind a single toggle, offering protection that extends beyond basic antivirus measures,” noted security analysts. “It serves as a potent tool that fortifies phones against theft, scams, and unauthorized access with minimal user effort.”
The program is part of Google’s broader Android security infrastructure, which includes monthly system updates enhancing Play services, Play Store, and core Android security components. While Google Play Protect conducts daily scans and real-time checks, Advanced Protection provides an additional security layer specifically designed for users requiring heightened protection, particularly important given the increasing sophistication of mobile security threats.
