The program offers enhanced security features specifically designed for high-risk users such as journalists, executives, and enterprise employees. The program, available on Android 16 and above devices, requires manual activation as it is disabled by default.
The Advanced Protection Program can be accessed through different paths depending on the device. Pixel phone users can enable it via Settings > Security and privacy, while other Android device users will find it under Settings > Google > All Services.
The program implements Google’s most rigorous security protocols through a single toggle switch. Key features include stricter app verification processes that limit sideloading – which supports Google’s upcoming 2026 requirements for developer verification. The program also integrates with hardware-based security keys for enhanced authentication, following the industry’s broader shift toward FIDO2 passkeys and passwordless authentication.
