Hanoi Metro has expanded its digital ticketing capabilities with a second pilot phase for mobile app-based weekly tickets on Metro Line 2A, which connects Cat Linh and Ha Dong. The new phase, running from October 4-15, 2023, builds upon the initial trial conducted in September by adding weekly ticket options to the existing single-ride and daily passes available through the “Hanoi Metro” mobile application.

The comprehensive pilot program combines multiple digital identification technologies, including electronic authentication, biometric recognition, and chip-based ID verification. The system accommodates passengers under 60 years old using Vietnam’s citizen ID cards, which have been undergoing a nationwide digital transformation, while also serving elderly passengers eligible for free travel. The program supports Vietnam’s broader efforts to expand digital identity services across public transportation and government services.

During the first phase, which operated from September 20-30, 2023, the system was implemented across 12 stations equipped with 65 gates. The infrastructure supports various payment and access methods, including chip-based ID cards, QR codes generated through the mobile app, NFC technology, and EMV card payments. The multi-modal approach reflects growing trends in transit authentication, allowing passengers to choose their preferred verification method.

To encourage participation, Hanoi Metro established registration points at Line 2A station information counters, where trial participants received promotional items from program partners including Visa, VietinBank, and the e-wallet service MoMo. The partnership approach mirrors successful digital payment adoption strategies implemented in other Asian metropolitan transit systems.

“The aim is to enhance passenger convenience and travel experiences,” said Hanoi Metro officials. The transit authority reports strong public engagement and has gathered valuable feedback during the initial implementation phase.

The pilot program represents part of Hanoi Metro’s broader strategy to implement modern technology solutions throughout its urban railway network, with the goal of providing more efficient and environmentally sustainable transportation services. The digital transformation follows similar initiatives in Vietnamese public services, including the recent launch of biometric verification systems for government and financial services.
