OpenID Foundation Opens Vote on Advanced Syntax for Claims Specification Relevant to Mobile Wallets

The OpenID Foundation has opened a formal member vote on the Implementer’s Draft of OpenID Connect Advanced Syntax for Claims (ASC) 1.0, a specification that defines how applications can request specific identity attributes from providers using structured query syntax.

The two-week voting period runs from May 1 to May 15, 2026. Approval would advance the specification to Implementer’s Draft status, a milestone signaling readiness for trial implementations and interoperability testing across digital identity ecosystems, including mobile wallet platforms that exchange identity claims.

OpenID Connect ASC 1.0 introduces two key capabilities. The first, Selective Abort and Omit, allows a requesting application to set conditions under which certain claims should not be returned. The second, Transformed Claims, provides a mechanism to apply functions to existing claims – for example, deriving an age verification result from a birthdate claim without exposing the full date of birth to the requesting party.

That selective disclosure capability is particularly relevant for smartphone-based identity wallets, where users may need to prove eligibility – such as legal age or enrollment status – without revealing unnecessary personal data. Mobile wallet ecosystems handling digital credentials, mobile driver’s licenses, and verifiable attestations stand to benefit from a standardized way to express fine-grained claim requirements during credential presentation.

The specification is designed to support use cases in regulated industries, government digital identity programs, and cross-border identity frameworks where the structure and assurance level of identity claims must meet specific technical and policy requirements.

The Foundation has been expanding its conformance testing program for wallet and verifiable credential standards, having opened self-certification for OpenID4VP 1.0, OpenID4VCI 1.0, and the High Assurance Interoperability Profile in February 2026. Earlier work on phone-based mDL presentation for bank onboarding and Android’s OpenID-based digital ID capabilities underscores how these protocol-level advances feed directly into the mobile credential experience.

Approved Implementer’s Drafts carry intellectual property protections for implementers under the Foundation’s licensing framework. The ASC specification is part of a broader set of OpenID Connect extensions under active development, including protocols for verifiable credential issuance and identity assurance that are central to the emerging mobile wallet infrastructure.
