Spain has confirmed April 2 as the operational start date for MiDNI, when citizens will be able to carry and present their national identity document through the official app on Android and iOS devices. The National Police has begun public-awareness sessions ahead of the rollout, including in Benidorm, where officers have been explaining how the mobile credential works in practice.
The app works by retrieving data from National Police servers in real time when a credential is presented, returning signed information to prevent falsification. Citizens can use MiDNI for a range of in-person verification scenarios, including administrative procedures, age checks, ticketed events, package pickup, hotel check-in, car rental and some financial-service interactions. The credential is not yet accepted for remote authentication, electronic signatures or use as a travel document.
The April 2 date gives a firm timeline to a project that has been building since Spain launched the MiDNI app and subsequently expanded the system to cover all 47 million citizens. The credential gained full legal parity with the physical DNI card last December, clearing the path for everyday use.
The police outreach ahead of launch reflects a practical challenge: the app is designed for live verification rather than a static screenshot or stored image, so businesses and frontline staff accepting the credential will need to recognize how the official presentation flow works from day one.
